Understory 54 began with a simple idea: to create a space where South Florida's emerging creatives could be seen, celebrated, and connected. The idea was conceived by Elijah Davis, who envisioned bringing local creative talent into the spotlight during Miami Art Week. As the vision developed, Natalie Vega joined in shaping the project, developing the name Understory 54 and helping build its identity, experience, and direction.
The name Understory comes from the layer of vegetation that grows beneath a forest's canopy. Often less visible, but essential to the ecosystem above it. We saw a parallel in South Florida's creative landscape: a growing community of artists, designers, photographers, musicians, and cultural voices developing beneath the more established creative scene.
54 is a nod to the cultural legacy of Studio 54, a place remembered for bringing together art, fashion, music, and culture under one roof. Understory 54 reimagines that spirit through the lens of a new generation and the creative community growing in South Florida today.
